MD, MBChB, FRCPC, FRCP (Edin.), FRCP (Glasg.), FACP

ROBERT LINDSAY, graduated in Medicine (MB, ChB with Commendation) in 1965 from Glasgow University UK. He completed internal medicine and nephrology training at Glasgow Royal Infirmary and Glasgow University where he also started his research career. He was recruited by Western University, emigrated to Canada, and was appointed Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Medicine (Department of Medicine and Division of Nephrology) in 1974. He graduated MD (Glasgow) by research thesis the same year (PhD equivalent). He was promoted to Associate Professor in 1977 and Professor in 1983. He officially retired at the end of the 2018-2019 Academic year but remains a member of the Department and Division as an Adjunct Research Professor. He was awarded Professor Emeritus status in 2019.

His major research focus has been on renal failure and its treatment by dialysis. His studies, laboratory to clinically based, have included the search for uremic toxins, blood-foreign surface interactions, biosensors in dialysis, as well as conducting clinical trials. In recent years he has been particularly interested in dialysis treatment adequacy with aim of improving the outcomes of patients with end-stage kidney failure. He was one of the pioneers in the development of more intensive forms of hemodialysis exploring the boundaries of frequency and time of treatment delivery. He headed the “London Daily/Nocturnal Hemodialysis Study “and was a steering committee member of the NIH funded “Frequent Hemodialysis Network”. He is currently engaged in the development of a wearable artificial kidney device.

His research funding has exceeded $15 million and through his research he has published over 400 papers and numerous book chapters; most papers are in leading peer review journals. In recognition of his work he was awarded the Kidney Foundation of Canada Medal of Excellence in Research in 2006 and the Belding Scribner Award from the International Society for Hemodialysis in 2015. In 2014 he was made a Lifetime Honorary Member of the Canadian Society of Nephrology (CSN). The “Robert Lindsay Chair in Hemodialysis Research and Innovation” has been created to ensure the future of this important research area at Western.

From the teaching perspective he is noted for his mentorship of many young nephrologists and for his creation of “The London Dialysis Course”. The latter is now available to all Canadian Nephrologists and Nephrology Trainees through audio-visual modules held on the CSN web site. For these contributions he became the 2020 recipient of the CSN Clinical Nephrology Teaching Award.
